Elephant Sanctuary, Hohenwald, TN

It was disconcerting to me to hear the recent news about allowing trophy hunters to import elephant parts into the country again. A few years ago I had the privilege of doing a photo shoot at The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, TN for American Airlines magazine and was profoundly moved by being close (but not too close) to these incredible animals. During that assignment I got to see the interaction of Tarra the elephant and her two favorite companions, Carol Buckley and dog Bella. Sadly Bella is gone now but to see the intelligence and interactions of these beings is moving and the recent news of a very threatened species being exploited further is a difficult decision to grasp.
